Getting to The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Arriving by Plane

Air travelers to the University of North Carolina arrive and depart from Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), which is approximately 18 miles from Chapel Hill. 

Ground transportation:

  • Taxis – one-way fares average $34.70.
  • Car Rental - participants renting a car from RDU should take I-40 West towards Durham and Chapel Hill.  Take Exit 273-B (Hwy 54) towards Chapel Hill.  Continue straight for 4 miles to the top of the hill.

Arriving by Car

From Interstate 40 (from Raleigh and points east):

  • Take Exit 273-B (Hwy 54) towards Chapel Hill
  • Continue straight on Hwy 54 for 4 miles to the top of the hill

From Interstate 85 (coming from Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Greensboro):

  • Take I-40 East towards Raleigh
  • Take Exit 273 and turn right at the end of the exit ramp onto Hwy 54
  • Continue straight for 4 miles on Hwy 54 to the top of the hill

From Interstate 85 North (from Durham and points north):

  • Follow I-85 to intersection with Hwy 15-501 South
  • Follow 15-501 South towards Chapel Hill; the highway will divide
  • Remain on 15-501 South (Bypass) bearing left, away from Franklin Street
  • Turn right at Highway 54 Exit towards "UNC-Chapel Hill"
  • Continue to the top of the hill on Hwy 54


Getting to the Institute for Arts and Humanities

The Institute is housed in Hyde Hall, which is located on the north section of the UNC campus in McCorkle Place between Franklin Street and Cameron Ave.  It is just north of the Old Well adjacent the Hanes Art Center. 


Parking and Municipal Transit

  • UNC Visitor Parking - parking is available in the Morehead Lot on Franklin Street and the Swain Lot on Cameron Ave.
  • City Parking - the Town of Chapel Hill manages a number of pay lots on Rosemary St,, which runs parallel to Franklin St. one block to the north.  The town also maintains a number of coin-operated pay meters on Franklin Street.  Parking times vary between two and three hours.
  • Bus Service – The University of North Carolina and Town of Chapel Hill/Carrboro maintain a free bus service connecting many campus locales with points throughout Chapel Hill and Carrboro.  In addition, the Triangle Transit Authority operates buses connecting the University with points in the greater Raleigh-Durham area.

Getting to the Hotel

Participants of the conference will be housed at the Holiday Inn Chapel Hill, located at 1301 N. Fordham Blvd. (Hwy 15-501).  

From Interstate 40 (from Raleigh and points east):

  • Take Exit 270 and turn left onto Hwy 15-501
  • Remain on 15-501 South (Bypass) bearing left, away from Franklin Street
  • The Hotel is on the left at the intersection of Hwy 15-501 South/Fordham Blvd and Ephesus Church Rd.

From Interstate 85 (coming from Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Greensboro):

  • Take I-40 East towards Raleigh
  • Take Exit 270 and turn right at the end of the exit ramp onto Hwy 15-501
  • Remain on 15-501 South (Bypass) bearing left, away from Franklin Street
  • The Hotel is on the left at the intersection of Hwy 15-501 South/Fordham Blvd and Ephesus Church Rd.

From Interstate 85 North (from Durham and points north):

  • Follow I-85 to intersection with Hwy 15-501 South
